How To Prevent Snoring

By Waheed Lamidi

Unfortunately snoring is a relatively everyday condition caused by loosely suspended tissues that inhibit the normal airway in the throat. This only occurs when the body and throat are completely at rest, which explains why snoring is restricted to sleep. A tongue for instance, will fall back into the throat when the jaw drops down, constraining the air passage. Depending on the velocity of the air passing through, the force in the throat could be doubled or tripled, producing the noise.

Since there is a narrowing in the air passage when a person sleeps on their back, patients are advised to sleep on their sides to prevent snoring. Gravity forces the tongue and other loose muscle to relax to the rear of the throat which shrinks the room required for breathing. This is why the first device made to keep a person from snoring was the sock that covered a tennis ball stitched to the back of the snorers pajama shirt. By employing this, the person who snores can't lie on his back while sleeping: it is just too painful.

Obese individuals are in addition, more liable to be victims of snoring as their necks are a bit more fleshy and there is likely to be more loose muscular tissue that will hamper the natural passage of air. The heavier one gets, the more prone one is to noisy and deep, resonating snoring. There are many techniques to lose weight, including diets and daily exercise, the difficulty lies in finding one that is the best for you. Be patient in waiting for the effects of weight loss to come though and don't forget that you did not gain weight in a single night so you will not lose it quickly either. If you are overweight, and you snore, it is often advised that you work on loosing weight. This will not only help you feel better about yourself and your well being, it could also have a dramatic impact on your snoring.

It has been observed that alcohol and drugs can have an effect on snoring and or trigger it. It's better that you do not take in either alcohol or drugs right before you go to sleep. Additionally, these substances can slow your breathing so be mindful not to get so exhausted throughout the day so that you will not get too relaxed when you go to sleep.

You can help yourself and your body if you get into habits that establish a regular sleep plan. If you have a good pattern of sleep habits you are very likely to get getter sleep. Try not to breathe with your mouth, as this is often the trouble that causes snoring. If you breathe through the mouth, your problem can be exacerbated, as a fallen jaw promotes the tongue to drop and cover the throat. You should practice nasal breathing as soon as you discover that you are beginning to breathe through your mouth. In the end, treatment for snoring will oftentimes have you alternate from mouth to nasal breathing, showing that prevention is more effective than searching out ways to handle the condition. - 14130
