In terms of its psychological benefits, meditation reduces anxiety and irritability and improves your memory and thus your ability to learn. Accordingly, it also produces a positive outlook on life giving you a feeling of rejuvenation and youthfulness.

Some other significant benefits of meditation include:

Physiotherapy Treatment in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis with a frequency in the population of about one percent. It is a chronic systemic disease with gives symmetrical arthritis of many major joints and involvement of many other areas such as the eyes, skin, heart and lungs. Common symptoms are feeling unwell, fatigue and marked morning stiffness. The disease destroys peripheral joints with a significant amount of disability, although modern therapies are progressing rapidly and promise to prevent much joint damage. Many theories connect infections to the onset of RA but this has not yet been proved.

Rheumatoid arthritis is not a benign disease as it is connected with significant disability, increased mortality and disease complications. Activities of daily living (ADL) are limited and after five years since the diagnosis about one third of patients cannot work, with about half having significant reduction in functional ability after 10 years since diagnosis. Life expectancy may be shortened by five to ten years from disease complications and therapeutic side effects. RA affects all racial groups and is two to three times more prevalent in females. Although RA can occur in the elderly and in children it is most common between 35 and 50 years of age.

Rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis is made by the doctors clinical examination and by the self report of the patient rather than laboratory tests. A typical complaint is severe stiffness in the morning, remaining for an hour or longer until it improves as much as it is going to. Three joint areas must be affected by the swelling and pain of arthritis, with a symmetrical joint presentation and involvement of the hand small joints. Usually the disease comes on slowly but sometimes there is an acute, sudden onset of severe joint swelling and pain. Typical symptoms also include losing weight, feeling below par, a fever and muscle pain.

Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is complex and involves a multi-disciplinary team approach. Patient education is vital so they can understand a complex disease with many and severe consequences which can affect functional abilities profoundly. Joint deformities are common, especially of the metacarpophalangeal joints of the fingers, the wrists and the knees. Hand deformities badly affect hand function and mean the person is unable to manage normal daily tasks. The physio will assess the patients mobility as foot, hip and knee pain and joint deformities are common, limiting the ability to walk, and walking aids are difficult to use because of hand problems.

Acute treatment concentrates on joint protection, splinting, ice, painkillers and very gently range of motion exercises, all aimed at maintaining some joint function while the joints settle down. Once the acute episode is easing, physio treatment moves on to increasing the ranges of motion and muscle strength and regaining functional abilities. Medical Marijuana Research Helps In Neuropathic Pain

Studies have shown that medical marijuana can reduce the problem that happen when someone has what is known as chronic pain syndrome which is when a burning sensation occurs and a simple touch can feel like pain.

They were then instructed to rate their pain on a scale from "no pain" to "worst pain imaginable."

Another study in 44 patients reported that they found medical marijuana helped reduce neuropathic pain arising from a variety of conditions, including spinalcord injury and diabetes and was published in in June in the Journal of Pain.

The study was conducted by having the participants smoke medical marijuana on a set schedule of the first two puffs, three puffs an hour later, followed by four puffs an hour after that -- and the product from a single cigarette containing either 0%, 3.5%, or 7% THC.

Prior to smoking medical marijuana, the average pain rating was a 55 on a 100-point scale and decreased by 46% in both treatment groups and by 27% in the placebo group one hour after the last inhale.

It is quite normal for analgesic drugs are often tested against experimentally induced pain. Such studies have been conducted for medical marijuana too.

For example, 15 healthy volunteers received skin injections with capsaicin in a study conducted in 2007 and reported in the journal Anesthesiology.

Keep Yourself Healthy this Winter

The winter time is when residents of the United Kingdom hunker down in warm homes. They wrap themselves in thick clothes and blankets and spend the winter in front of roaring fires and radiators turned all the way up. The object during UK winters is to stay warm and dry. Because this is the goal, most residents of the UK think that staying healthy during the winter months is easy. In fact, it is just as important to monitor your health and take care of yourself during the winter as it is during the warmer months of the year. Here are some tips to help you make sure you are as healthy as you can possibly be this winter time.

1. Practice proper nutrition. It will be tempting to simply snack away the winter months and doing so is certainly easy with all of the treats that are served and given out during the winter holidays. Do your best to ensure that you are eating as many vegetables, fruits and grains as you need while also making sure that sugar and fat do not take over your diet. Don't forget to have at least two servings of dairy products each day as well.

2. Get Your Sleep. The winter time seems made for sleeping but you would be surprised how often people lose sleep during the darkest months of the year. Go to bed on time and get at least eight hours a night. You need to rest so your immune system stays strong.

3. Wash Your Hands. Use hot and soapy water to wash your hands every time you visit the loo and before each meal that you eat. Most cold and virus germs can be defeated before they take hold by simply keeping your hands clean and disinfected.

4. Stay Active. Going for a run might feel brutal during the cold winter months, so invest in a gym membership instead. It is important to keep your body active to help fight off the lower moods that often accompany the cold weather and extra hours of darkness. Exercising regularly will also help fight off any weight gain you might be worried about after eating all of those holiday treats!

5. Get a Flu Shot. There are plenty of places where flu shots are affordable or even free. Make sure you get yours every year to give yourself extra defence against the colds and viruses that wreak havoc during the winter time.

Rehabilitation of Colles Fractures by Physiotherapists

Colles' fractures, named after Abraham Colles who first described in 1814 the common fracture of the last inch of the radius and ulna near the wrist, is a very common consequence of a fall on the outstretched hand (FOOSH). Typical treatment is immobilisation in a plaster of Paris or similar material for five to six weeks to allow bony union, followed by a rehabilitation period of a month or more, a short period of which might involve a wrist brace for comfort during activity. Due to the functional importance of the hand, the period of immobilisation is kept to a minimum to prevent dysfunction of the hand and wrist.

Once the Plaster of Paris has been removed the physiotherapist will examine the wrist for appropriate healing by firmly palpating the area over the fracture, which should not show much more than mild tenderness. The hand should look a natural colour, have no tightness or swelling in the fingers and muscle wasting should not be severe. Movements of the wrist will be restricted in a few planes but should not be affected in all planes of motion, neither should there be severe pain on movement nor pain on all movements. If many problems are present the physiotherapist will take urgent steps to rehabilitate the patient.

Range of movement exercises are the first line of treatment for a physiotherapist, teaching exercise performance every two hours. Many colles' fractures do very well simply with regular end range exercise practice and do not need more sophisticated treatments. The physiotherapist checks any restrictions in shoulder and elbow movement then records the forearm rotations, supination and pronation, which are important functionally. The physiotherapist will then assess wrist flexion and extension, finger flexion and extension and thumb movements. Most commonly restricted movements are supination and wrist extension.

Once the plaster splinting has been removed the wrist may feel it lacks support and the patient may be apprehensive to use it. It is important not to keep the wrist immobilised for too long to prevent complications but early removal means there may be some pain and weakness. A typical forearm wrist brace, often called a futura, is routinely fitted by the physiotherapist to the patient's wrist by Velcro straps, to be worn when doing normal daily activities. The brace is not to be kept on continuously but only for heavier hand work, being taken off the rest of the time and for regular exercise.

If the ranges of motion do not improve as they should then the physiotherapist will consider using joint mobilisations to ease the movements. Accessory movements can be performed to the inferior radio-ulnar joint to help pronation and supination, and to the radiocarpal (wrist) and midcarpal joints, with the physiotherapist fixing one side of the joint as he or she moves the other side of the joint passively. This can be done gently or more vigorously at the end of range to push against the restrictions within the joint. Mobilisations can also be performed with the joint at the end of its available movement to give it the sliding and gliding movements it requires.

Strengthening the wrist occurs with a gradual increase in functional activities but joining a hand class can instruct the patient in practicing the large variety of small movements that the hand can perform and needs to strengthen for optimum hand function. Repetitive work at pieces of apparatus can strengthen and harden the hand to turning, twisting, pulling, grasping and fine work with the thumb and index finger. This can move on to work with weights or functional activities if the person needs to return to manual labour or another job requiring upper limb strength.

Urgent treatment is indicated if the hand is extremely painful, tightly swollen and has poor movements, before a pain syndrome develops. At this stage medical review is important to make sure there are no complications with the fracture such as poor healing or lack of healing. Analgesia and contrast baths can help with the pain, desensitisation with the hypersensitive areas which can develop and massage and exercise with the swelling. Patient education is vital so they know they have to work hard and through the pain to rehabilitate their hand. - 14130

Real Time Management

"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31-32).

Before my precious father became a Christian in the last week of his 88 years of life, he often commented on the fact that the rest of us in the family spent too much time reading the Bible. "Haven't you got that thing memorized by now?" he'd asked. "You must have read it a hundred times!"

I can't say how many times each of us has read the Bible through, but almost ten years after my dad went to home to be with the Lord, we're still reading it-every day. Why? Because we're serious about being disciples. Jesus said more than once that if we want to be His disciples, we must "abide" in His Word. Since He is no longer walking the earth in bodily form and speaking to us verbally today, that means His disciples must be reading/studying/meditating on His Word, as found in the Scriptures, regularly. To do anything less disqualifies us as serious disciples.

Sound harsh? Judgmental? Exclusive? If so, I didn't say it. Jesus did. And He has a right to set the requirements for following Him. We have a lot of people, both inside and outside of the Church, who like to quote the latter part of John 8:31-32 (many of whom have no idea where the quote comes from), while ignoring the first part. "The truth shall make you free," they proclaim. But what is truth? Pontius Pilate asked that very question, even as Truth stood right in front of him. And we all know how that turned out.

Jesus declared quite clearly that He alone is "the way, THE TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6, emphasis mine). Just as there is no other way to reach God the Father except through Jesus, there is no other way to be truly free or to be dedicated disciples than to abide in the Word of God. When schedules and circumstances, trials and commitments overwhelm us and we find ourselves too busy to spend regular quality time in the Scriptures, then it is all the more important that we listen and obey the words of our Savior if we truly want to be free. The world will tell us that freedom is found in pursuing our own desires and plans, but God says otherwise. Who will we believe?
