What Is Chiropractic?

By Kevin Kean, D.C.

Chiropractic was discovered on September 18, 1895 by Dr. Daniel David Palmer in Davenport, IA. Dr. Palmer was an accomplished anatomy and physiology expert from Canada who moved down to the United States to find a better life. He established a natural healing practice in Davenport where he had helped many people reach better health through natural methods.

One of his friends was a man named Harvey Lillard who owned a janitorial business in the Davenport area. Dr. Palmers building was one of his locations. Harvey was legally deaf and had been unable to hear since he was 17 years old. At that time, he was lifting something heavy and heard something pop in his back. Since that time, his hearing got progressively worse to the point that he couldnt even hear the horse and buggies ride by on the cobble stone streets.

Dr. Palmer, with all of his knowledge in anatomy and physiology, came to the conclusion that it may have been that pop in his back that caused him to lose his hearing. Dr. Palmer got Harveys permission to examine his spine on a table in his office. When he did, he found an area of his spine that was asymmetrical. Using his hands, he put a specific force into the spine at that level for a specific result. Harvey could hear much better immediately afterward. His hearing got progressively better and after a couple of treatments, Harveys hearing was completely restored. Dr. Palmer realized that the spine houses and protects the nervous system and if the spine is causing interference to that nervous system, then the body will function at a lower level.

Chiropractic still operates on the same principals today. As Chiropractors, we believe that the body has the inborn ability to heal itself. The things that we do throughout our lives that cause stress on our bodies and our spines hinder this potential. When the spine moves out of its normal alignment and eventually puts pressure on a nerve, it is called a subluxation. This is a misalignment that causes damage to the nerves of the body and eventually leads to poor function. This is exactly what Chiropractors take care of. We reduce the pressure on the nervous system so the body can function at its optimum level and prevent any future injury or illness.

At CORE Chiropractic, we practice traditional Chiropractic. We provide adjustments to the spine in order to allow optimum function of the nervous system. By doing this, we release the bodys inborn ability to heal itself. This helps every cell, tissue, and organ to get its full nerve supply and to function at its optimum level. If you are looking to live a healthier life or are looking for relief from pain or discomfort through natural methods, we can help you with that! - 14130
