The Wonder Medicine Belladonna

By Sanjib Sarkar

The belladonna plant is very toxic. Belladonna is commonly called deadly nightshade. Belldonna is found throughout Europe, West Asia, North America and North Africa. Belladonna plants reach the height of 1.5m (5ft) tall with 18cm (7in) long. The belladonna's berries are very toxic.

The berries from the Belladonna plant are extremely toxic. A child that swallows 5 berries in their mouth could potentially die. An adult that swallows 10 to 20 berries could also potentially die. Belladonna is a weed and can be identified in any wooden area. Belladonna should also not be consumed by certain livestock or dogs and cats. Cattle and rabbits are not affected by the Belladonna poison. These animals may safely eat the Belladona berries.

Medical Uses Of Belladonna

Belladonna can be found in minisicule amounts for over the counter flu and cough remedies. Belladonna is used by eye doctors to dilate pupils. A small amount of the drug is put into a patient's eyes.

Prescription drugs often contain Belladonna. Donnatal is a prescription drug that contains Belladonna alkaloids. Peripheral anticholingergic/antispasmodic action and mild sedation is provided with the usage of Donnatal.

Donnatal is often used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, acute enterocolitis and duodenal ulcers. There no conclusive studies that this drug helps with any irritable bowel syndrome or duodenal ulcers.

Belladonna as a homeopathic remedy

Belladonna was proved by Hanhemann in 1799. The medicine was used to cure Scarlett fever. Homeopathic belladonna is used to cure circumstances with sudden onsets. These type of conditions mimic Belladonna poisonings. Belladonna is used to cure people with high fever, sore throat, nausea, delirium, muscle spasms, flushed skins and dilated pupils. Anyone consuming Belladonna will experience these type of symptoms.

Cold and flu symptoms, infections with inflammation, intense pounding headaches, boils, earaches, seizures, labor pain, pink eye, nose bleeds, nephritis(inflammation of the kidneys) restless sleep, teething pain, tonsillitis, acne and sunburn are treated with homeopathic Belladonna.

Female use Belladonna to treat breast infections, urinary bladder infections, menstrual cramps, and irritated nipples due to breast feeding.

These symptoms are better with warm air and standing. Conditions may worsen with cold air, movement and lying down.
