Dealing with Toenail Fugus Infection

By Jack Penn

The fungus that affects the nails is a small living organism that thrives in moisture and warm dark areas, usually under the nails. These infections of finger and toe-nails are curable by the doctors.

The fungus attacks the toe-nails more than finger nails because, the feet is always covered by footwear and moist most of the time. Elderly people are more susceptible given their weakness. Most people above the age of 50 suffer from this illness. In total, about 20% of people have got some sort of nail infections.

The fungi that causes this nail infection also cause ringworm infection and athletes foot. Generally a fungus infection is misappropriated as a bacterial infection like in the case of nail psoriasis and nail break ups. It is not the bad hygiene that one practice is the cause for fungal infection. The moisture retained in a warm dark background works as the triggering factor. Knowing the cause and taking necessary steps itself would reduce the infection cases.

A fungal attack is usually possible when there is a disturbance in nail growth or a on a person having malfunctioning immunity system

Usage of public showers/toilets also contribute a part. The carriers of the fungus would be using the same shower areas that are used by others. It should be noted here that, once the fungus settles in our nails, the nail itself gives protection to the fungus by way of shielding it away from sunlight.

When you notice an yellow or white spot in your nails, and you suspect it to be a fungal infection, consult a doctor without delay. In most cases of fungal ifection of nails, doctors would suggest solutions like Diflucan, Lamisil or Sporanox.

While using these medications for the prescribed time period, you would notice that the new nail that takes the place of the old infected grown out nail, would be a healthy one. Normally, it would take 3-4 months to cure the infection completely. Once cured, be careful not to expose the nails to moisture and darkness again.

For mild infections, your doctor might suggest Antifungal varnish. One such antifungal varnish is penlac. The application is quite simple. You need to apply the varnish on the infected nail, daily once. This varnish is removed using alcohol. Continue this for 1-2 months. The curing is proved for nearly 20% of nail fungal infections. As said earlier, this works best only for mild infections. - 14130
