The Damaging Effects of Sleep Disorders

By Susan Pillows

Sleep is so normal in our lives, that we don't realize how essential a good night sleep is for a normal existence. Sleep deprivation is one of the known tortures since ancient times. Some persons lack sleep on a regular basis, due to various sleep disorders, thus becoming more and more tired and unable to cope with the daily routine normally.

The most common sleeping trouble is insomnia. This is the inability to fall asleep for long periods after going to bed. If neglected, insomnia can have severe consequences in the day life of the sufferer, making him even sleep at work, or in transportation means. It can be cured if the cause is discovered and treated properly.

Sleep apnea is another kind of disorder, this time even more serious. This trouble can actually kill you. If your breathe stops while you are sleeping, you may not be able to regain control on your respiratory muscles, so you'll die by a lack of oxygen in your cells.

Thousands of jokes have been born thanks to another ailment. Snoring made us laugh so many times, that it seems hilarious. However, it prevents the snorer to properly rest while sleeping, and his life partner may get a depression. Lack of sleep is more serious than you thought.

Sleep walking affects a smaller part of the population. This is amazing how these persons have activities they are not aware of while they are sleeping. There were cases in which the sleepwalker drove his car without accidents and without breaking any traffic rules.

Ill people needing permanent treatment may experience the side affect of certain medicines, of being sleepy all day long. In case of dangerous jobs such as heavy equipment operators who manipulate huge machines, this can lead to disasters, so they shouldn't go to work during the treatment. - 14130
