The anti aging and skin care industries are huge. Millions or billions of dollars are spent by consumers on anti aging skin care treatments, and so there is big money to be made. And there are plenty of big companies in the anti aging and cosmetics industry that take advantage of this.
But that doesn't mean that the products work well, and there are many big brand name anti-aging skin care products that do very little. There is no government regulation in the US requiring companies to demonstrate that their products work or that they even use safe ingredients.
So you can also find that there are many dangerous ingredients in anti aging and skin care products, and the products don't work very well.
But despite this they sell huge amounts of these products that advertise their ability to make you look younger. Everywhere you look you see products telling you they will make you younger and look great.
So the challenge for the consumer is to navigate through all the hype and actually find a range of anti-aging skin care products that work and don't contain potentially dangerous ingredients.
Here's how not to choose a good anti aging product.
1. Make sure you don't buy any anti-aging products that contain fragrances. The big companies put fragrances in their skin care ranges because they know we like to look younger and smell good.
There's 2 problems. Firstly you won't look younger because chances are the skin cream won't make you look younger, though you may feel good about having used it.
Secondly, fragrances are not good chemicals to put on your skin. Because that's what they are, chemicals that smell good, and many of them aren't that good for you. It's the same with perfumes, for example, but if you apply a perfume it's only a small squirt on one spot, it's not massaged all over your face where it disappears, into your blood. So just use a perfume instead.
2. Don't buy anti aging skin care creams with collagen in them. Now we all know that as we age our skin loses collagen, so surely we need collagen replaced to combat the sagging and wrinkling and lines that come with skin aging?
Well yes and no. We do need to replace the collagen, but collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin, so putting collagen in the bottle does nothing, other than making you feel good perhaps.
The only way to increase the levels of collagen in our skin is to stimulate the skin to make more collagen itself.
So if putting the collagen in the bottle does nothing why is it in the bottle and why are those big name celebrities on TV telling you how well it works? Because they know there's lots of money to be made. That having collagen in the bottles sells lots of bottles.
So it may not do much, and it may have dangerous chemicals in it like fragrances, but it still sells like hot cakes.
That's marketing for you.
But there is a problem. It costs megabucks to pay that celebrity to go on TV and tell you how great the products are, and those fancy bottles cost a lot.
So although that anti-aging product is really just making you smell better and not much else it sells big time because people assume that if it costs that much it has to be good.
