Neuro Linguistic Programming And Its Creator John Grinder

By Ingrid Preube

John Grinder along with Dr. Richard Bandler is the co-founder of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). John is a graduate in psychology of the University of San Francisco and later acquired a PhD in Linguistics from the University of California in San Diego in the early 1970s. He also served in the US Military as a captain in the Special forces and later worked for the US Intelligence agency.

Grinder was appointed to the position of professor of Linguistics at the newly formed University of California in Santa Cruz. He has published many books and papers, two examples of which are On Deletion Phenomena in English (1972) and Guide to Transformational Grammar (1973). He is considered to be an expert on the subject of syntax within the broader field of linguistics.

John later became involved in some therapy sessions with Richard Bandler, a psychology student at the time. It was here that he became enthralled with the ways that therapists use linguistic patterns to effect results with their patients. John Grinder and Richard Bandler later went on to co-found Neuro Linguistic Programming.

The language patterns used by therapists such as Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton H. Erickson, who was a hypnotherapist, was used along with transformational grammar as the basis for John Grinder and Richard Bandler to come up with their own model called Neuro Linguistic Programming.

John has also co-written many other pieces about the theoretical basis and practical uses of NLP. This was after developing the model of Neuro Linguistic Programming further, partly based on the publications of the therapists above.

All over the world, many people have become more self-confident as a result of studying the techniques involved in Neuro Linguistic Programming. This has allowed them to become more successful both in their professional endeavors and their personal lives.
