Can My Dog Be Allergic To Fleas

By Catherine V. Testaratti

Now who would have ever thought that your dog could be allergic to fleas? Well they can and as silly as it sounds it can be a very serious for some dogs. Heck, it's pretty darn annoying for the pet owners too.

You can see something like this start in your puppy but it is also very common in much older dogs. The adult flea does the biting but they don't live long unless they are on the host dog. Hmmm, is that supposed to make you feel better?

The adult flea makes the initial bite but when it falls off it dies. The eggs left behind will hatch and continue the process. Getting control of the infestation is critical to curing the problem.

We have heard of cases where this medical condition if not treated has lead to behavioral troubles with dogs. For your dogs sake as well as yours, it is important to know that constant monitoring along with treatment can free your dog of fleas. Do what's best for your dog and continue to use the treatment that gives you the best results.

Symptoms of an infestation will include chewing and scratching. Check your pet for signs of fleas or flea dirt by using a flea comb. If there are no visible signs of fleas, your vet might recommend testing for mites.

Fleas can also bite humans so if you think you might have an infestation in the house or yard, it's best to treat those areas as well. Really it only takes a couple of bites to set your dog's flea allergy in motion. Treating the dog without treating the home or yard can just lead to another infestation.

Help your dog get relief from this itchy allergy by taking immediate action. Treat them with a dip or flea shampoo and a continued application monthly of the topical applied to the back of the neck. You dog will surely thank you, if he could!

Don't watch your dog suffer if you think it has a flea allergy. If it's loosing its hair and you see lesions on your dog's body, then get it to the vet. The sooner treatment is started, the better you dog will be.

As we have said, once you have conquered the infestation, continuous monthly treatments will need to be applied. Sometimes it is necessary to do multiple treatments in your house and outside before you have totally eliminated this pesky critter. Take good care of your pet; they will love you more for it. - 14130
