Ovulation calendars

By Shola Oslo

Ovulation calendars are used to identify an approximate ovulation date, as well as the days of the month you're most liable to get pregnant. They are used by women as a way to enhance their fertility naturally.

Using an ovulation calendar is pretty simple. Start by entering the date when you last menstruated and how many days are in your menstrual cycle. The calendar will then give you a rough date of when you should be fertile, based on the figures you entered.

You might be wondering whether something so easy will give you your desired result (a healthy baby). It might... but then again it might not. It all depends on your own level of fertility.

So, what can you do to increase your chances of success? The first thing to do is to monitor the position and consistency of your cervix. Your cervix changes in position and softness during your cycle. When you're ovulating, your cervix will be higher, and more difficult to reach, and a lot softer than normal.

Monitor the quality of your cervical mucus every day. (Of course, this will exclude the days you're menstruating!!) When you're ovulating, your cervical mucus will become clearer, thinner and stretchy, resembling the consistency of egg whites.

Start charting your basal body temp on a daily basis. This needs to be done while you're still in bed, as there's very little chance of variations. Although it won't tell you when you're fertile, it will indicate that you have just released an egg, as there'll be a sharp rise in your temperature. Noting down when this happens will help you in predicting when you're next going to ovulate.

All of these factors will familiarize yourself with the intricacies of your own menstrual cycle, and assist you in working out when you're most likely to conceive. This is particularly true when you are taking notes over a period of time.

Of course, these tips work fantastically if your periods are regular and you ovulate at the same time of the month. What happens if your cycle is irregular?

The important thing to do if your cycle is not regular is to get your body back into balance, by taking a herbal supplement such as FertilPlus, which can regulate your menstrual cycle and stimulate ovulation. If you have access to a herbalist specializing in reproductive herbology, he or she can help you select which herbs will work best for putting your cycle into balance. One your menstrual cycle has become regular, these tools will work for you, and getting pregnant will be easier with the use of an ovulation calendar.
