Hemorrhoids Removal Procedure

By Heather-Jane Hunter

Over 240 million human beings in this world today have or have had problems with hemorrhoids. For the most part people can treat them at home with home remedies and over the counter medicines. But if you let them go and they reach a severe stage, the only way to get rid of the problem is by having a hemorrhoids removal procedure done. This is the best possible way to receive long term relief.

The procedure is called a hemorrhoidectomy. This is usually an out patient surgery, but in some cases the patient has had to stay overnight in the hospital. This surgery is done on internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. It is usually the last resort when other treatment methods have failed.

A hemorrhoidectomy - or hemorrhoids removal - is typically accomplished by first placing the patient under anesthesia. A small incision is then made in the swollen tissue by the surgeon, who then ties off the veins leading to the hemorrhoid to prevent bleeding. After this hemorrhoids removal procedure is accomplished, the wound is typically covered in gauze (or is sometimes stitched closed). Most of the time the patient can return home that same day.

Most of the time the recovery time for the hemorrhoids removal procedure is 2-3 weeks. The patient will have a great deal of pain in the recovery process so the doctor should prescribe pain medication. Just remember most pain killers will cause constipation so if you're taking the pain medicine try and take a stool softener as well. Or you can avoid the pain killers all together and use Tylenol if you can deal with some mild pain.

Hemorrhoids removal procedures have a success rate of over 90% in most cases. This means that the hemorrhoids never return. Just about 5% of the people who have had the procedure have reported the return of the hemorrhoids over time.

The most commonly risks with hemorrhoids removal procedures are pain, bleeding, and problems going to the bathroom. In some extreme cases patients has reported narrowing of the anal area. This is a painful procedure. However it's worth it if you are suffering from swollen irritated hemorrhoids everyday!

After having a hemorrhoids removal procedure performed caring for your wounds can be vital in your recovery time. You will certainly experience a lot of pain. As I mentioned before it's best to take over the counter pain medicines than the prescribed pain killers because you're less likely to develop constipation. However if you cant get by without taking pain killers then you want to take some stool softeners with your meals everyday.

By using ice packs for the first few days after having the hemorrhoids removal procedure done will keep the swelling down. This is recommended using 2-3 times a day for the first 3 days. After that you should switch to heat packs instead of the ice packs. Or you can use sitz baths for the heat process. If you use the sitz bath use them 2-3 times a day for at least 20 minutes at a time. This will alleviate the swelling and pressure. Also by eating a lot of fruits and vegetables with high fiber you will be able to pass the stool softer and easier. Every doctor will give the patient follow up care instructions to make sure you have a speedy recovery. - 14130
