Sleep Disorders Brief Overview

By Susan Pillows

Everybody needs at least 4-6 hours of sleep per night. Children need even more. When exposed to sleep deprivation, the human body can't handle the situation and gives up the fight. Some persons lack sleep on a regular basis, due to various sleep disorders, thus becoming more and more tired and unable to cope with the daily routine normally.

Some people can't accumulate the required number of sleeping hours, condition defined as insomnia. They just stay in bed, with their eyes closed and cannot fall asleep. If it lasts for more than one month, insomnia may strongly affect life, because it exhausts the body resources of energy. Those resources are normally replenished by the night sleep.

Aside from insomnia, which has daytime consequences, another severe condition can even become lethal. This is the sleep apnea and it is life threatening by suffocation. All body organs rest while we sleep and so do the muscles and the immune system. When in danger, the life saving reactions may occur with a small delay that may mean death for some of us.

Thousands of jokes have been born thanks to another ailment. Snoring made us laugh so many times, that it seems hilarious. However, it prevents the snorer to properly rest while sleeping, and his life partner may get a depression. Lack of sleep is more serious than you thought.

Who hasn't heard about sleepwalkers? As the name says, they get out of bed and start walking around the house, then they go back to bed as nothing ever happened. They are sleeping during all this time and they don't remember anything from their night walk the next day.

Chronic patients are required to take medication which may cause them to feel very sleepy throughout the day. Usually they are warned not to drive during the treatment. Anti allergic medication is known for giving such side effects. - 14130
