A Severe Form Of Hemorrhoids - Thrombosed Hemorrhoid

By Joel Maxford

A thrombosed hemorrhoid is a hemorrhoid that has become so large that blood as pooled in it causing a blood clot. It will turn blue-purple in color and is extremely painful. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are associated generally with external hemorrhoids. Most treatments involve surgically cutting the thrombosed hemorrhoid so that the clot can be drained and the pain will recede.

It is possible to get temporary pain relief by taking frequent warm bath, and avoiding dehydration. Some methods to prevent hemorrhoids include emptying your bowels the moment you feel the urge, avoiding aggressive use of toilet paper, regularly exercising, eating a lot of high fiber foods, using laxatives and stool softeners if you are constipated and more.

The above-mentioned treatments will not actually cure the thrombosed hemorrhoid. In order to completely get rid of the hemorrhoid you will need some type of medical treatment. Most medical treatments are fairly minor surgery and they all basically work by blocking the flow of blood to the affect area so that the hemorrhoid shrinks back to normal size.

All non-surgical methods such as the ones mentioned above may not actually cure your hemorrhoids. Normally if your hemorrhoids do not reduce back to normal size with non-surgical methods you may need to have surgery or another type of medical treatment.

Possibly the best treatment is to have the thrombosed hemorrhoid completely removed. This will decrease the chances of it recurring and will quickly get rid of the pain. There can be some bleeding and discomfort after the procedure while the area heals. There is a danger of infection so antibiotic cream is normally prescribed and warm baths can help relieve any discomfort. The removal of a hemorrhoid may take up to a few months to completely heal.

If you have a thrombosed hemorrhoid then really the best treatment is to have it removed. You will get instant pain relief and the chances of it occurring again decrease dramatically. If you only have the hemorrhoid drained then it could happen again. Once the procedure is completely you will have to use an antibiotic cream to prevent infection and may need to take a light pain killer. Normally patients will see some blood in their stool until it is completely healed. It can take a few months for the area to heal completely.

Many individuals that experience this intense pain and will go directly to the emergency room. However many times the emergency room will not perform the procedure, as they are afraid of you catching a systemic illness or having an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. Many times the problem is misdiagnosed and they will treat your for an anorectal fissure, perianal infection, hypertension, or inflammatory bowel disease. The symptoms of thrombosed hemorrhoid are very similar to other illnesses though the treatment is quite different.

It has been proven the excision has the lowest rate of recurrence for thrombosed hemorrhoids but many times this type of hemorrhoid can be misdiagnosed as mentioned above. The surgical procedure provides the most immediate relief. This type of surgery can be considered an emergency or be conducted as an office visit. It is important to make sure your diagnosis is correct, as there are other illnesses that may have similar problems but are treated much differently. - 14130
